Red into blues

There is only one word to describe this kid who looks like a young Ron Howard and has an afro that 70's blaxploitation stars would envy: Fropie. Don't let the looks fool you. This shy young guitarist, Andy Poxon, can play. I've seen him with his band now twice in the last week and he hasn't disappointed.

We first caught him opening for Coco Montoya in Annapolis at the Rams Head On Stage last Sunday. The Sunday night set was limited to only about a half hour which he and the band filled with all original compositions. Their performance impressed road veteran Coco who will now have to be looking over his shoulder.

At the Show last night in the Old Bowie Town Grille (pronounced Bowie), The Andy Poxon Band were the main event. I guessing by the crowd that Andy (from nearby Crownsville) is something of a hometown hero. In fact the band held the party for their first CD release, Red Roots, at this very venue this past June.

The place was packed with a whole assortment of friends, family and music lovers like myself and my friends Mike and Chris. We were lucky enough to be sitting up front near the stage and enjoyed an evening filled with original music as well as some well chosen covers plus a couple songs sung by the grilles owner who has a wonderful voice.

In between sets we bought copies of his CD and had the whole band sign them. I gushed about how talented they were and I signed up for their emailing list to keep abreast of upcoming shows. I just can't say enough good things about this talented young blues guitarist and his tight backing band. Visit their website: www.andypoxon.com or better still go out to catch him live.
